Japanese Car Import Regulations in Italy

Importing of Cars in Italy
  1. Vehicle Shipping Importing new vehicles is discouraged.
  2. Italian citizens must prove residence abroad for more than 18 months in order to import a Car. Vehicles imported duty-free must not be sold for a minimum of one year.
  3. Non-Italians may import one auto duty-free, provided that proof of ownership and use for at least one year is obtained by means of Certificate of Origin.
  4. Restrictions apply to autos over 2,000cc engine.
Important documents for Import a Car into Italy
  • Ownership of vehicles (i.e. Purchasing Receipt etc.,)
  • Registration Card and manufacturer’s data
  • Valid Insurance onto National Territory
  • Certificate or Card Above MUST be original documents - notarized copies are NOT accepted
Registration of a Car in Italy
NOTE : The Italian Ministry of Transport states that only the following people may register a foreign car in Italy:
  1. Italian nationals (even if living abroad (outside of Italy)
  2. Foreign nationals with official residence in Italy (proof of the car owner’s residence is required).
Remember : Within 60 days of the date of issue of the Italian registration, the vehicle must be entered onto the Public Motoring Register (Pubblico Registro Automobilistico) (PRA).
This is carried out at the Provincial Office of the ACI (Automobile Club of Italy), which manages the PRA in the province where the holder of the registration document lives.
