Audi impresses fans in Shanghai

INGOLSTADT, Germany - Audi impressed the fans at the DTM’s world finale in Shanghai (China) with a strong showing. For many of the 19,000 spectators (throughout the weekend) and 1,400 Audi guests Timo Scheider was the man of the race.

Just one day after his serious accident in qualifying, the two-time DTM Champion, assisted by a perfect strategy of Audi Sport Team Abt Sportsline, pushed forward from position four on the grid to third place. An early end of the race deprived the German who lives in Austria of an even better result.

“My A4 was perfect today. If I had started from the front row I could have fought for victory,” said Scheider. “I’ve got to thank the guys who prepared the car again overnight.” The mechanics worked until 2 a.m. and continued at 7 a.m. to give their driver an optimal car again – which they clearly managed to do.

After the many incidents on both of the practice days the DTM finale was started behind the safety car and only went green after three laps. Timo Scheider put pressure on his rival in front, Jamie Green, from the outset and managed to bump him from third place thanks to well-timed pit stops. After the second tire change Scheider also caught up with Paul Di Resta in second place and put him under massive pressure. But before the Audi driver was able to start his first overtaking attempt the race was stopped early, eight minutes before the end, due to a mid-field collision and was not re-started.

Impressive performances were shown by Martin Tomczyk and Miguel Molina as well who took fourth and fifth place. After starting from position eight Martin Tomczyk proved that it is certainly possible to overtake on the street circuit in Shanghai. With a bold but fair maneuver he bumped Jamie Green from position four on lap 33. Tomczyk also posted the fastest race lap of all Audi drivers.

Miguel Molina shone with an overtaking maneuver against David Coulthard and came in for both of his pit stops very late which enabled him to pass Jamie Green as well. In the end the 21-year-old Spaniard in fifth place was the best driver of a 2008-specification vehicle. In tenth place of the standings and with a score of 15 points Molina finished the season as the most successful DTM rookie.

Audi presents GT4 concept

INGOLSTADT, Germany - On the occasion of the DTM race in Shanghai, Audi presented the concept of a GT4 car based on the Audi TT. The TT, developed by the Technical Development and the Production divisions plus quattro GmbH, is intended to extend Audi’s new modular customer sport program from 2012 forward.

With the production-based TT GT4, Audi wants to offer potential customers a base option for affordable motorsport. The vehicle’s platform is a motorsport body with a roll-over cage, a safety-optimized fuel tank box and further modifications which will be identical for all future customer sport versions. The Audi TT is equipped with a TFSI engine delivering about 250 kW (340 hp). The front apron, rear apron and the rear wing stem from the production Audi TT RS. The hood, doors and trunk lid are made of CFRP and the windows of plastic. The TT is fitted with a S-tronic transmission with a differential lock, a modified production suspension with adjustable dampers, plus 9.5 x 18 inch light alloy wheels.

The Audi TT GT4 is planned to sell for about 120,000 euros. Audi is not only targeting Europe but also the Asian market. On the occasion of the DTM race in Shanghai the Audi TT is being launched in the Chinese market as well.

Audi Design’s secret project: creation of the A7 Sportback inspires advertising

INGOLSTADT, Germany - It is one of the most unusual genesis stories in the Audi model family. The A7 Sportback was a design team’s dream project that originated without an order and without a requirements specification – and literally seduced the Board of Management. The creators of the advertising campaign launched as part of the market introduction in late October also took their inspiration from the free creativity behind the luxury-class coupe. Here, too, the story starts with nothing more than a blank sheet of paper.

It sounds like a secret project when the Head of Audi Design, Stefan Sielaff, talks about the birth of the A7 Sportback. In a studio atmosphere, a group of ten designers tried their hands at creating an automotive dream: a gran turismo as a four-door coupe. The idea came from Walter de Silva, today Head of VW Group Design. He wanted to borrow from the Audi 100 S Coupe to create the most unadulterated, purist concept ever. The radical thing about this project is that the company had not placed an order for such a model. No engineer had defined the technical foundation, nobody described the positioning for Marketing. The Audi A7 was created without coordinates, without a requirements specification. In the beginning there was nothing but the line.

“We had the Audi Coupé from the 1960s in front of us – and got crazy. The dynamic window line, the truncated rear end. The silhouette was finished quickly,” says Sielaff. “We experimented for a while, searching for the ideal proportions. Then it clicked.” The A7 Sportback was put down onto paper in an extremely short time, “from an idea and a just a single draft.”

The interior designers filled the draft by De Silva, Sielaff and Jorge Diaz with life: thoroughly sporty, yet elegant, with all the comfort that distinguishes a gran turismo. “We were so convinced of our product that we decided to go all in,” says Sielaff. “With the finished concept under our arms, we marched into the office of the Board of Management – without an appointment. We felt that the model was so radically beautiful that it would seduce them.”

Three “Auto Trophy” wins for Audi

INGOLSTADT, Germany - More than 103,000 readers of the German car magazine “Auto Zeitung” participated in the “2010 Auto Trophy” poll – and voted three Audi models as best in their class. The Audi A1, Audi R8 Spyder and Audi A5 Sportback took three of the highly coveted class awards in this annual event; five other Audi models were runners-up and yet another secured third place. In the Image Report car brand voting, the Ingolstadt-based carmaker led the field by a long margin for the seventh year in succession. During the 23-year history of the Auto Trophy, the brand with the four rings has gained this prestigious award 46 times for various models. The trophies were presented yesterday evening at a gala event in Düsseldorf’s “Meilenwerk”.

In the “midsize car” category, 22.6 percent of the voters chose the Audi A5 Sportback – the second time in succession that this Audi model has won the “Auto Trophy”. The same accolade went to the Audi R8 Spyder in the category “Convertibles above 30,000 euros”, with 19.6 percent of the votes cast.

The new Audi A1 completed the Audi hat-trick in this year’s “Auto Trophy” poll, and scored a second notable success immediately afterwards: the “Golden Steering Wheel”. In the “Auto Trophy” it attracted 28.7 percent of the votes in the “Small cars” category.

These impressive results were backed by second places in their classes for the Audi A3 (“Compact class”), the Audi A3 Cabriolet (“Convertibles up to 30,000 euros”), the Audi RS 5 (Sports cars”), the Audi R8 (“Supersport models”) and the Audi A8 (“Luxury class”). In the “Large cars” class, the Audi A7 Sportback took third place.

The Green Innovation Award was judged by nine of Australia’s most senior motoring journalists and presented today by Fairfax Drive national motoring editor Toby Hagon.

The People’s Choice Award is determined by members of the public voting in an on-line poll.

Judges praised Hybrid Camry for its small-car fuel consumption and above-average engine performance.

They described it as a breakthrough car for the Australian automotive industry, offering a tangible benefit as soon as it is driven from the showroom.

Hybrid Camry delivers large-car performance while substantially reducing fuel bills and environmental impact compared with other similar-sized family cars.

Volt gets new fuel economy label to go with new drive system

DETROIT – When the 2011 Volt begins arriving in Chevrolet showrooms over the next few weeks it will have an all-new fuel economy label to go with its unique propulsion system.

With its ability to operate completely gasoline- and emissions-free for 25 to 50 miles and then continue indefinitely with its range- extending engine, the Volt’s energy efficiency depends on how you use it.

Because the Volt works like no other car before it, General Motors and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency collaborated to design a new label to help consumers understand what to expect when they drive the Volt. Before plug-in cars like the Volt, calculating fuel economy was simply a matter of filling the tank with fuel, driving the vehicle and dividing the distance by the amount of fuel consumed.

Even though they have no tailpipe emissions, electric cars still use energy so the MPG equivalent (MPGe) is determined by measuring electricity use and converting it based on the energy content in a gallon of gasoline. This MPGe rating allows consumers to compare the Volt’s efficiency to other cars in its segment.

Nemesis is Britain’s first electric supercar

Dale Vince, an environmentalist and wind-farm millionaire, has built Britain’s first electric supercar. ‘Nemesis’ can accelerate from 0-100 mph in 8.5 seconds and reach speeds up to 170 mph.

nemesis-electric-sports-car

Nemesis started life as a Lotus Exige, before a specialist team fitted it with 96 lithium-ion polymer cells, two motors developing 330 bhp and a new transmission. The supercar runs for between 100-150 miles and can be charged in under two hours using its fast charger or eight to nine hours from a mains supply.

The car cost £750,000 to build, £400,000 of which came from a government grant.

A spokesperson for the Environmental Transport Association (ETA) said: “In the grand scheme of things, the emissions emitted by petrol-powered supercars are minor; a car like the forthcoming Nissan Leaf may not be as glamorous as the Nemesis, but a practical electric family car is a greater challenge.”
