Popular I30 Reaches Half A Million Sales Landmark

Hyundai’s C-segment family car, the European designed and built i30, last month passed cumulative sales of 500.000 units worldwide. This landmark figure – which includes over 200.000 units from the European market – is testament to the high quality and broad appeal of the versatile i30, which has cemented its position as a leading contender in its segment.

The i30, in hatchback and wagon forms, has dominated Hyundai’s European sales charts since its launch in the summer of 2007, when it was initially imported from the Ulsan plant in Korea. Since the opening of company’s first European plant, in Nošovice, Czech Republic, in November 2008, Hyundai has sold over 150.000 European-built i30s, including 95.000 examples during 2009.

“As the i30 approaches its third birthday we do not expect its popularity to diminish, especially now that the upgraded model, the i30u, is going on sale across Europe,” commented Allan Rushforth, Vice President of Hyundai Motor Europe. “This new vehicle offers a wide range of new features and benefits, including the ground-breaking Triple5 customer support package.”

Triple5 provides i30u owners with a five-year, bumper-to-bumper warranty, five years’ roadside assistance, and a five-year vehicle health-check plan.

Hyundai’s achievement with sales of its i30 is of an epic scale. For example, if all the i30 models sold so far were lined up bumper to bumper, they would cover twice the distance between Nošovice, where the i30 is manufactured, and Geneva, where the car was first unveiled in 2007. Stacked on top of one another, the 500.000 i30s would create a tower 154 times the height of Europe’s highest mountain, Mount Blanc.

i30 tops customer satisfaction and reliability survey

Meanwhile, the Hyundai i30 has been named the most satisfying car to own in a survey completed by over 23.000 drivers. The popular C-segment family hatchback took number one spot in Driver Power Top 100; a definitive poll on car reliability and satisfaction compiled by Auto Express, the UK’s best-selling weekly motoring magazine. This was the first time that a vehicle from a Korean manufacturer has topped the survey. The i30 in fact beat all other models on sale, including a host of prestige names and last year’s winner, the Jaguar XF.

In Malta, customers too can participate in this success by benefiting from a great offer on the i30 which is being made available starting from only €15,200 with €0 down-payment and €220 monthly installments over the next 7 years, along with a 5-year warranty. Moreover, Hyundai owners who participate in the Hyundai Car Clinic and are interested in trading in their vehicle for a new Hyundai i30 are also being given the chance to benefit from a €700 discount on the Hyundai i30 1.4ltr Classic which is currently being offered at a discounted price of €15,200. Other offers will also apply on the Hyundai i20 at a starting price of €11,700.

Hyundai Motor Reports 1st Quarter Earnings

Hyundai Motor Company, South Korea’s largest automaker, sold 842,037 units (domestic plants: 397,646 units, overseas plants: 444,391 units) worldwide in the first quarter, a 36.6 percent increase from a year earlier, helped by the launch of new models and strong demand in overseas markets.

Net profit increased almost fivefold to 1.13 trillion won ($1.02 billion), boosted by a surge in equity earnings from overseas subsidiaries such as China and India. Operating profit also rose to 702.7 billion won compared to 153.8 billion won a year earlier, while sales increased 39.6 percent to 8.4 trillion won.

Hyundai’s jump in first-quarter earnings can be attributed to the successful launch of its new models such as the all-new Sonata and Tucson ix (named Tucson/ix35 in other regions). Global auto demand, especially in emerging markets, is also showing signs of a recovery, boosting sales. Hyundai’s operating profit margin also rose to 8.3 percent from 2.5 percent during the same period a year earlier.

In spite of the uncertain business environment across the globe, Hyundai continues to raise brand awareness and expand market share in the U.S and European markets, based on quality improvements.

As seen from the all-new Sonata and Tucson ix, Hyundai has enhanced its design and product competitiveness. Hyundai will continue to introduce new models at the right time with differentiated marketing strategies, while expanding its sales network worldwide, to increase market share and competitiveness in advanced and emerging markets alike.

As part of its eco-friendly management strategy, Hyundai will also continue to expand its lineup of highly fuel-efficient and competitive cars, such as its first gasoline-hybrid vehicle, the Sonata Hybrid, which it launched last month in the U.S.

In preparation for uncertain factors lying ahead, such as rising oil and raw material prices and strengthening currency exchange rates, Hyundai will boost its market share by launching new models fit for each region and maximize profitability by cutting costs.

Toyota Environmental Activities Grant Program Accepting 2010 Applications

Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) announces that it has begun accepting applications today for this year’s1 Toyota Environmental Activities Grant Program, which is designed to support environmental revitalization and conservation activities aimed at sustainable development.

Grants will be provided to NPOs and other private, non-profit groups (excluding schools) that are promoting practical projects—inside or outside Japan—in these areas.

The Toyota Environmental Activities Grant Program was established in commemoration of TMC’s receipt of the Global 500 Award2 in 1999 from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), and has been carried out every year since 2000 as part of TMC’s environmental social contribution activities, with this year marking the program’s 11th year.

GM to Bring Chevrolet to Korea

Chevrolet, General Motors Company’s leading global vehicle brand, will be introduced in Korea in 2011. GM Daewoo Auto & Technology President and CEO Mike Arcamone made the announcement today at a press conference held in conjunction with the opening of the Busan International Motor Show.

“The introduction of Chevrolet will enable us to provide our customers an array of exciting new vehicles from the brand’s global lineup, giving them more driving options,” said Arcamone. “This will help GM Daewoo increase our sales and market share in the domestic market while generating additional revenue, strengthening our employees’ job security, creating new jobs and resulting in additional investment in Korea. We regard it as a key to our long-term success.”

As an example of the products that Korean consumers can expect, GM Daewoo introduced the new Chevrolet Camaro at its motor show stand. The popular sports car will go on sale in Korea in 2011.

“According to our market research, half of all Koreans are familiar with the brand and more than 80 percent are aware of Chevrolet’s distinctive logo,” said Arcamone. “This is indicative of the positive brand image that already exists among consumers in Korea toward Chevrolet. We see tremendous upside with its introduction.”

Arcamone also emphasized that today’s announcement is about brand coexistence, not brand replacement. “Our decision to launch Chevrolet is in the best interest of GM Daewoo and Korea,” he said.

Founded in 1911 and named after famous race car driver Louis Chevrolet, Chevrolet is one of GM’s four core brands. Last year, Chevrolet accounted for 44 percent of GM’s global sales and registered a 21 percent increase in sales from the previous year.

“GM is bringing the new brand to Korea to enhance our presence in the domestic market,” said GM International Operations President Tim Lee. “Last year, 3.3 million Chevrolet vehicles were sold in 130 markets worldwide, making it the fourth most popular passenger car brand globally.”

The success of products such as the new Chevrolet Cruze global compact sedan and the next-generation Chevrolet Spark mini-car has played a key role in Chevrolet becoming one of the fastest-growing vehicle brands in the world. Chevrolet sales in 2009 were twice those in 2005.

“Chevrolet has enjoyed success in mature markets in North America and Europe, as well as in emerging markets in Asia Pacific and Latin America,” said Lee. “We are confident that it will drive us into a new era in Korea.”

Stanley Steemer Picks Chevy Express 2500 Vans To Meet Its Latest Fleet Needs

Stanley Steemer International, Inc., a commercial and residential carpet cleaning company, recently chose General Motors’ Chevrolet Express 2500 cargo vans as the newest additions to its U.S.-based corporate and franchise fleet. GM’s 100,000 mile/5-year transferable powertrain limited warranty led Stanley Steemer to upfit the Express 2500 cargo vans and immediately place 30 in the fleet lineup.

“Adding Stanley Steemer to our long list of fleet customers was a goal that the GM teamed worked extremely hard to achieve,” said Eric Raich, fleet account executive for GM’s Fleet and Commercial Operations. “The van’s extended wheel base for increased cargo space and lower lifecycle maintenance costs made the Express 2500 the most fitting and logical decision for what Stanley Steemer needed in their fleet vehicles.”

The Chevrolet Express 2500 has 225.1 cubic feet of maximum cargo space, and the extended wheelbase models offer 261.6 cubic feet of space. The Express Cargo 2500 also features standard passenger-side and rear swing-out doors that open wide for easy access.

The Vortec 4.8L V6 is standard on the Express Cargo 2500 and provides 280 horsepower and 296 lb-ft of torque, and can handle a payload of up to 3,058 lbs., regular wheelbase mode, and 2,848 lbs. on extended wheelbase model. The Express Cargo also comes with a Hydra-Matic 6L90 6-speed automatic transmission and revised rear axles to help improve low-rpm torque, highway fuel economy and overall drivability.

“The longest powertrain warranty and exceptional flexibility for our upfitting variations were two of the main factors that led us to choose the Express Cargo 2500,” said Sean Vrenna, Stanley Steemer engineer. “When you add in drivability, fuel economy, and easily accessible cargo space, it makes this the perfect van to meet our business needs.”
